It Started With a Cardboard Airplane
After an unexpected layoff from an aerospace R&D job, I found myself home with my kids. One afternoon, my boys and I built a cardboard airplane big enough for both of them to climb inside.
We had so much fun building it that my wife looked at what we had made and said, 'You should start a cardboard toy company.'
A couple of years later, The Cardboard Engineer became real.
The idea was simple: help more kids experience the satisfaction of making something with their own hands.

You absolutely can build with cardboard at home—and we hope you do. The kit saves you the time of designing the project, measuring every piece, figuring out how everything fits together, cutting it all out, and fixing what doesn't work. We've already done that part so your kid can get straight to building.
HOW LONG DOES A KIT TAKE?
The first build may take around 15–30 minutes depending on the child and the kit. But the build is only the beginning. Kids can decorate it, modify it, play with it, repair it, rebuild parts, and continue with the included challenges and other activities.
WILL MY CHILD NEED HELP?
That depends on their age and previous building experience. The kits are designed and tested with kids, with the goal of letting children do as much as they reasonably can themselves. Younger children may need help with some steps.
DO WE NEED SCISSORS OR KNIVES?
Not for the initial kit build. The pieces are already cut. If you later use the included templates to make replacement parts from cardboard at home, cutting tools may be needed and adult help may be appropriate.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMETHING BREAKS?
That's part of why the rebuild templates are included. If a cardboard piece wears out or tears, you can use the template to make another one from cardboard at home.
IS CARDBOARD DURABLE?
Cardboard is not indestructible, and we don't pretend it is. It is meant to be played with, changed, repaired, rebuilt, and eventually recycled. Its biggest advantage is how forgiving and easy to work with it is.
IS THIS A STEM KIT?
We do not market these as STEM curriculum. The goal is to give kids more opportunities to build, imagine, solve problems, work through frustration, and experience the confidence that comes from making something themselves.
